Improve Your Poker Strategy

Poker is a card game where players have incomplete information. They are dealt two cards and then five community cards are placed in the center of the table (the “pot”). They aim to make the best 5 card hand using their own two cards and the five community cards. The player with the highest hand wins the pot. Players place bets of varying amounts into the pot based on their position at the table. These bets are called forced bets and come in three forms: antes, blinds and bring-ins.

As the game progresses, bet sizes increase as the action heats up. This is when it becomes important to pay attention to your opponents’ reaction to the card draws, raises and calls – this is called reading your opponents. It is also the time to develop a poker strategy based on your own experience and review it regularly.

One of the best ways to improve your poker strategy is to learn about ranges. Ranges are the selection of hands that an opponent could have and are worked out by going through all possible combinations of cards. By comparing the highest odd card in each hand, you can determine which of the hands is stronger. For example, if both hands contain a pair of kings, the higher ranking pair is KK, and if the pairs are equal then the kicker (the lowest non-pair card) decides which hand is superior.

Often times, a lower poker hand is not worth the risk of playing it, especially when your opponent is known to play tight. A better strategy is to either fold or raise the bet size. By doing this, you will price all of the worse hands out of the pot.
