In the United States, state lotteries are a major source of revenue, with the vast majority of proceeds being used for public education. However, the way that lottery marketing is conducted may be at odds with larger public interest goals. Rather than focusing on the benefits that the money will have for state coffers, advertising typically focuses on the fact that playing the lottery is fun.
